CH 23
The world economy started to change after WWII. World trade and consumerism started to become more than just a country thing, but instead something everyone can take part in. Markets and stores started popping up everywhere. Stores now had items from all over the world. The use of outsourcing started to become more popular. The introduction of credit cards became more and more of the norm. It is hard to even imagine a time before credit cards existed, which is sad, because so many people are no in debt. We have become a society of instant gratification and spending more than we actually have.
Companies also learned to maximize profits and work around laws, often by outsourcing jobs and placing factories in places to avoid tax fees. With the movement of product so did the movement of people. Migration occurred amongst different groups and for different reasons, which included moving the industrial areas to work and sadly many women forced into sex labor.
The widening gap between the rich and the poor started to increase, which is no surprise. America was taking the lead, and was even looked at as an empire similar to centuries before. America uses its wealth to operate and make deals with other countries. America wants to be seen as a world power but also as a big brother, who essentially can kick your butt. While economy was “booming”, because America was sort of left without a parent, America freely moved and entered wars with other countries. We still have the Afghanistan war still going on, and there is no one who can really stop us. It was not until recently where we felt competition (lack of a better word). We need someone to put us in our place.
With globalization came feminism movements. After women’s suffrage, the movement for women rights died off. However, the issues of inequality did arise. It was being seen as the lesser sex and being treated like it. Women are more than capable of just being the homemaker. Feminist issues differed in areas, while some were fighting for education others were fighting just to not be exploited. It is interesting to see the different stages of feminism in other countries.
With the introduction of new way, the decline in religion started to rise. With progression the belief of religion was seen as superstition and against those who started to become more and more education. Religion around the world started to face opposition.
With the world changing, it also birthed environmental activists. Population was increasing and we are sucking the earth dry of its resources. Change needed to happen to combat the destructiveness industrialism caused. Animals and habitats need to be taken care of, and it is sad that many animals are close to going extinct and rainforests are being destroyed.
