CH 21

I never really knew how big Marx was in influencing a communist movement. I knew about China and Russia, but there were many other countries that truly believed in Marxist theories. We often hear about countries who believe in communism, but to learn how about Russia's Revolution is quite interesting. Lower class people were tired of being stepped over and the country being ran by the elites. Grassroots organizations were against private property or situations where only the rich profited while the rest suffered. We often hear bad things about communism, but Russia was moving towards a revised way of Marxist theory. More fair and equal. To be honest, I know about communism but not enough to actually understand its deep concepts.

While Russia seemed to know how to revolutionize their country, China took awhile before change occurred. Communism in China relied heavily on its peasants, but many were hesitant to go up against the upper crust. Women were drawn to this revolution by a theoretical liberation for them. However, the peasants resisted such liberation, and since the peasants is where most of their support came from-- well women took the back seat again.

I did not even know about Communist Feminism, which later influenced the West. This movement did not start from grassroots, but instead came from the top. Women started to gain rights and more and more move toward equality. Women were no longer forced to become a house wife but instead "learn to rule the state" as well.

While the communist movement did some good, it was not about to keep up with the capitalist countries. They had to reform in order to provide for their people as well as make progress.

Communism brought a lot of issues and divided a lot of the world. Communism vs. democratic views. United States was anticommunist, and they feared that the spread of communism would destroy every progress they have made. When the Iron Curtain fell, which was to keep outsiders from interfering, it ultimately ended the cold war.

Chapter 13

This chapter really introduced ideas that were not as well known. When I think of expansion, I only think of Columbus discovering the Americas, what happened to Native Americans and the African slave trade. Since it was a horrible time, those parts of the discovery are what I remember mostly. I knew there were changes back in the Old World, but most of the history I have learned only focused on the New World. The Western Europe empire was said to be a lot different than the changing Europe back home, which makes sense since they had the "freedom" to do things differently than back in Europe. What drove Europe and why were Europe the ones to discover the Americas? The proximity of their location made it easier for them to cross the ocean. Europe was closer to the Americas. Also it made sense that since Asia was dominating the trade, they didn't need to look anywhere else, which is something I didn't know. CH 16 Part 2

The Atlantic revolutions had effects that echoed all over, such as British looking to colonize around their area since they lost the colonies in North America. It's funny to see how these small things ended up changing the world and starting other movements. I never knew thought the enlightenment thinkers had a lot to do with abolishing slavery. Britain was a role model for many other countries and so when slavery was abolished there, others soon followed. The need for slaves was also decreasing, and that drove the price of slaves down. There're still people who believed in slavery and even after was abolished so many laws were created that still made them feel like they were still slaves. And even after slavery was gone a new form of slavery was just introduced. They looked not to Africa but the other countries to replace these people as indentured servants.
