CH 16 1/2 & Part 5 Intro

What is so interesting when reading the intro to part 5 is that now it makes sense as to why history in high school revolved around Europe mostly. I can barely remember what happened with other empires, and it seemed like only Europe was the one making advancements. They were making advancements globally, and we rarely hear about other places. It was a great time for the Europeans, but it is good to note that other empires had their fair share of advancement and cultural flowering as well.

The birth of the modern era came from the Enlightenment. New ideas of equality arose and gave birth to the feminist, socialist and communist movements. Women did have a lot of trouble gaining equality and even demanding it posed as a threat to men, despite women playing a role in revolutions. There was no real benefit for them and the slaves.

Revolution mean different things for different groups and colonies. In North America revolution meant freedom from Britain and starting a new way of living. It was to make their old ways from Britain better, and the colonies in America were becoming their own. The tension was not from each other but rather from Britain. The revolution for Haiti mean freedom from slavery but not necessarily and sort of other reform.

Side note, when France asked them to pay them money for the loss of slaves and plantations is absurd! I did not know about that, and it is sad to think that they only paid that off not too long ago. Haiti was left in rubble, just as Latin America.

I did not know that Latin America had more promising colonies compared to anywhere else. They were the wealthiest, but when the Spanish Revolution happened, they ended up being the least democratic and became the least amongst colonies.

And to think how these places could have been if Europeans didn't exploit these areas and people. How can we go back and fix something that happened so long ago? It'll take a lot of time and effort, and even that-- there will always be that resentment towards certain groups.

Such as slavery and what happened with the Native Americans. Despite the efforts made to fix the past and fix the future, there will always be that "knowing of what happened" amongst those people. It can't be forgotten, but can there really be forgiveness too?
