CH 20

We are in an era that we aren't quite sure if it has ended and started into a new one or what! So many changes occurred following the late 1800s. The collapse at the center is what ignited these changes. Europe was dominating in trade and in the sphere of influence. Europe being so competitive against its neighbors led to the wars that would follow. I do remember learning about wars, but I never realized how it truly started and that it partly was rooted in the industrial revolution. It may be a stretch but it did drive greed even more.

With WWI I do remember European conflicts. I do not recall the Great Depression as being one of the results of that. I also didn't realize that it affected more than just the US. The Great Depression was a result of people not having enough money to spend, which then just created a surplus of product, which trickled back to having less jobs etc. That is such an interesting thought, since you would think US consumerism would have gone down by now, and maybe it has, but I feel like we just keep shopping. When Europe suddenly became the debtor and US the forerunner, it makes me think about the situation now with how much our country is in debt. I mean, the number is so big I feel like another Great Depression is amongst us.

We learn about the Holocaust, but I did not realize it was tied to the Treaty of Versailles. Germans were shamed and had to take the loss for everyone, which ended up building resentment amongst Germans. Germany was not united, which allowed for Hitler to fall into power. I learned that Italy and Japan had similar ideas to them, of course not to the extent of racial purification.

With Japan it wasn't fighting from within, it was more of unity from foreigners. Japan was against social reform and democracy. Japan started to become a more military controlled nation.

With dissatisfied  countries, the second war was just around the corner. This time it wouldn't be accidental but prepared. WWII was different in that so many civilians were killed. Europe itself was destroyed, and many women killed. This was also the time where women were publicly used for men,  especially if they were in the war. That is disgusting, and to think that wasn't long ago, and that this still happens today. I never thought Japan would partake in demeaning women, since many are so respectful. However, I do see that in some places women are seen as the one to attend to a man's need.
